a lovely funeral

Your grandmother was always kind to you, always patient, and loving.  You wonder, now that she’s gone, if you’ll ever have such a person in your life again.

While you say your goodbyes, a strange sound makes you look down. You see the coffin mechanically printing a small slip of paper. You tear it off and read….

Is this a message for you, or someone else? The note leaves you with the feeling that, while your Grandma’s life has ended, this day might be just beginning.

 inheriting a mystery

“Your grandmother left you several items, which I will read out to you now,” says the executor, handing over a small pouch.

“I leave you this set of commemorative coasters from the New York World’s Fair. Protect them with your life.” While you wonder how a set of coasters could possibly be so important, he reads on:

“The souvenir nickel is also special. Do you know who is on the nickel? That is Thomas Jefferson, one of the founding fathers of the United States, and a personal hero of mine. The nickel is yours now.”

The executor pauses, his eyebrows raised. You both share a moment of perplexed silence.

“I leave you this cotton swab. I remember cleaning your ears when you were little. My dying wish is that you use one of these from time to time.” He awkwardly hands you the cotton swab.

“I remember so fondly spending time with you in my kitchen, putting together so many dishes to enjoy – and so I leave you the recipes you said you loved the most.” He hands you the well-worn index cards.

“Finally, I leave you my house…” the executor reads, “…with the hope that you get back to that kitchen very soon.”

The executor again pauses and looks up at you. “Now here’s the thing – she didn’t leave us a key to the house. Instead, she says  that you will know what to do.”
